Edgar
Allan Poe's-'THE RAVEN'
Tis I, your Glamour Ghoul of the Undead Set, DITA DIRT
NAP! Last time, 'Mamma-DIRT NAP Reviewed
a ROGER CORMAN Flick. This time it's Double Feature
even! I bring u another great CORMAN Film-Choice of;
'THE RAVEN!'
Dita could listen to Price, Karloff and Lorre's voices alone, all day, perhaps just reading the phone book! The voices are so rich, especially Karloff's! He must have been 'Shakespeare' in another life! DITA can't help but sometimes think of Dr. Suess's; The Grinch, when I closed my eyes while listening to KARLOFF speak his lines! They are all great voice-over artists in their own rights! The story line has all 3 as great wizards. Lorre's character comes in the beginning of the picture as the famous Raven from Poe's poem knocking at Price's chamber door. Vincent's character lets him in and the fun begins! First with Price turning him slowly back into human form. Lorre then cons Price into going with him to Karloff's magician Castle. By the way, look for the beautiful visual scene of Price, Lorre and their offspring played by a young, studly/sexy Jack Nicholson as Lorre's son and Olive Sturgess as Price's damsel daughter, crossing the bridge over the moat going into the castle. Nice shot! To make a long story short, there's lots of trickery and magic that goes on and ends up with Lorre being turned back into a Raven and the 2 finger tip magicians, Price & Karloff battling each other to the end, upon destroying the castle! This magician against magician scene to DITA, is the best and funniest in the movie and is not to be missed! Price in this scene is much fun to watch as he floats around the room in mid air doing magic from his cool-gold-gothic chair! You can tell he's having fun and has a look on has face as if to say ,this is effortless and easy magic that comes from my finger tips! Love it!!! Another earlier scene in the film has him showing Lorre his dead fathers coffin, complete with scary-dead dad inside the comes back to life only to say; 'BEWARE! Hmmm! Also he is surprised when Lorre's character sees a picture of his dead wife, Lenore, played by the busty & beautiful Hazel Court, and tells Price he has seen her with Karloff at his castle. Price then opens up his wife's coffin to show the magician her rotting corpse that has a twisted look on her face with her mouth permanently open! Kid's ,I'm telling you the look on her dead face is funnier than that 'sneezing baby panda that startles it's mother' on 'YOU TUBE'! So funny, DITA almost died laughing!! 'DITA!' Uh, yes Derek (The Vampiric Announcer)? Derek;' You're already DEAD!' DITA; Oh, right! I forgot! There are many count-less things that I love in this fun film but , alas too many to still mention! So, I will say I wish they still made films like this with actors as talented as these! At least it's now preserved on this DVD and beautifully digitally Remastered! Now for the extra's on the disc that come with 'THE RAVEN'; *Richard
Matheson, Story Teller; 'The Raven' Featurette ( Brilliant and
insightful, a-MUST-see!) DITA will also say that this is the most Horrificfun I had watching a DVD like 'THE RAVEN'! Simply because it has a great movie with a nice transfer and the right kind of extras DITA likes to be included on a Double-Feature DVD! Nice job, M-G-M !! Now as I mentioned earlier about the other Price Feature 'COMEDY OF TERRORS' almost entitled 'GRAVE-SIDESTORY' by Matheson, it fares okay and is worth a look but can't be, and shouldn't be compared to 'The Raven' except for same casting of PRICE, KARLOFF & LORRE! Also stars; another infamous Horror Icon; BASIL RATHBONE as the corpse that would NOT die! That of course leads to lot of comic situations! Also stars; Joyce Jameson as Price's love-starved wife who sings Opera so bad that her voice scares the cat, makes flowers wilt and their vase break as well as make her father played by Karloff think they might of had an earthquake! Joe E. Brown plays the 'Grave Yard Grounds Keeper' that unlocks the crypt RATHBONE's corpse then escapes from.........because he has an axe to grind! Watch the Trailer for; 'COMEDY OF TERRORS' ,here> http://youtu.be/Pd_qsd_uc18 ) This film has cool, creepy sets and a very cool cadaver-carriage wagon that Mizz DIRT NAP envies! Hmmm, wonder if I can get one on 'CRAIG's LIST'? PRICE & LORRE play a couple of gothic 'LAUREL & HARDY' type Morticians who resort to killing off local older gentlemen around town when business gets low. Of course various high -jinks ensue! A side note of why Karloff's character isn't given much to do in this flick as you may notice is that Karloff was originally slated to play Rathbone's part of the corpse that wouldn't die, which was a more physical part. Karloff at that point in his life, had problems with his legs, there-in having the 2actors change roles. 'THE COMEDY OF TERRORS' is from 1964. The extras for 'Comedy Of Terrors' include; *Richard
Matheson; Story Teller-'Comedy Of Terrors' Featurette
( Nice job) 3 Skulls Out Of 3. Watch it with tonight with a big tub of buttery popcorn and your best ghoul-fiend in the dark! For more info on VINCENT PRICE, check out www.vincentprice.com or just Google his name; www.google.com Until Next

THE
LAST WOMAN ON EARTH (The Remastered Edition)
This week I bring you Another ROGER CORMAN Flick; 'THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH'(1960)!!! Vincent Price's 1964 Film wuz called; 'LAST MAN ON EARTH' As my readers know DITA is a big fan of Vincent Price!! I reviewed his Roger Corman; Flick, last week called; 'THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM' here in the DEN! Now on to my review. This movie
is of course done by infamous low-budget Director;
Roger (get it done quick & cheap)
Corman. That is something I admire about Corman
and of course his spectacular pairings with Vincent
Price and one of DITA's favorite Writers; Edgar Allen
Poe! Well of course while they are under water there is a sudden unexplained temporary interruption of oxygen that has killed everyone on the island and quite possibly the entire world! DITA gasps! Oh no, clutch the pearls! By the way, this movie is high on Sci-Fi and almost non-existently low on horror. Except for the dead bodies strewn about lightly here and there! Again DITA reminds you; Low Budget! Although I could have played a corpse quite convincingly, if I do say so my self! Oh right, I just did, any-hoo, e-mail me Mr. Corman for future projects, and Roger, I work DIRT NAP, uh, I mean, I work DIRT CHEAP! I need the work. As my friend Derek (the 'Vampiric-Announcer') would say; Enough about you!
To make a long story short? They go to a mansion, on a hill with no pesky dead bodies lying around...............fish................ and mess around, by the way, the two men are now fighting over 'the last woman on earth'. Why, cuz she's flirty, pretty, and just a little bipolar. Oh, and you know what they say, Have your own eggs, will travel! You know........to re-populate! Dita pity's the poor soul who has to rinse out THAT lingerie! They also become depressed about the end of the world, this is pre-Prozac mind you. The two men fist fight over 'last-woman', (at one point the man who's married to Evelyn hits his buddy on the temple with a rock, ouch!) who likes to wear spaghetti-strapped, fitted bodice-full skirted party dresses with her upswept hair. Us girls like our fashions EVEN if it is the end of the world! Towards the end of the flick, it becomes very soap opera-ish. Susan Lucci (Erica Kane) would do very well in a future remake of this picture! You know..........when in doubt, flip your hair! That's what DITA does. For the Soap-ish ending we have 'last-woman' falling for her hubby's buddy. Her hubby is having none of that, so he tries to send him packing, but after his bud drives away, Erica Kane jumps out of the bushes w/packed suitcase, I mean 'Last Woman' and into the car with 'The Other Man' and speed away to the church by the marina. Then the plan was to hop on the boat at the dock but........she tells him she wants to have his baby but 'the 'other last -man' tells her that having baby days are over, there's no need now that the world is at an end (what a pity, what with her party dresses all packed and ready.) Poor thing! DITA thinks that's just like a man to have commitment issues even in at the end of days!! W-H-A-T-E-V-E-R!! In the mean time, her hubby's not given up, even though he said he would'\n't come after her. He hot-wired a truck and caught up with them. Once again, he just has to play 'WWE-SMACK-DOWN' with his friend and this time rips up his shirt, FINALLY....... theirs a little skin in this movie, however brief. This IS a Roger Corman flick, is it not? Jeez, he's worked with Traci Lords (Not Of This Earth-remake) for pete's sake! REALLY! The lead actress Betsy Jones-Moreland is great in this role and easy on the eyes but a little T. & A. goes along way and helps with Promotion. Note to Roger Corman; they call them fun-bags for a reason! Just DITA's opinion, mind u! Although, I do love the opening nude photo of Betsy that Corman used to run the title & credits over. It has her lying on her stomach and smashing her boobs so u can't get a peek at them. Corman does however put in a nice panning shot of her boo-tay! By the by, her best line w/drink in hand wearing her billowy Cock-tail dress is; 'I THINK I'LL GET MORBID, I think I have a Death Wish!' all while standing dangerously on the balcony! Yipes! Now back to the ripped-shirt guy finally making it to the church and to 'Last Woman' . Hubby catches up by high-tailing it to the church as well. The 'other man/guy' starts to give a speech, while stumbling around on the alter, all while blindness is quickly setting in, he can no longer see them while he's blathering, he dramatic-ly falls flat on the floor in front of the married couple and...............and well kiddies, DITA doesn't tell the whole story, so be a dear, and click on 'THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH' icon next to my Review and purchase it...........umm, I mean see it for your self, my little 'Infected Spider Bites! Now for MIZZ DIRT NAP's List of borrowed, padded and quite possibly recycled Outlines from 'The Last Woman ,done in 1960' and maybe used again lightly in 'The Last Man, done in 1964'; A. In
'Last Woman, there's the last scene/speech that takes place on an
alter. In 'Last Man, same thing,
alter included. Director Roger Corman is known as 'THE KING OF THE B's, and was born April 5,1926. He was also an Engineering student and feels he's been able to use those skills on his plentiful library of films that I, DITA DIRT NAP will be reviewing in the future here in 'THE DEN.' Helpful-Hint; 'The Roger Corman Collection' is now available on DVD! As you
know, I love extras especially on a Remastered-Edition
DVD. I was an Extra-once, but that's another story.
DITA gives this movie 2 and a half SKULLS out of 3.
'PIT
AND THE PENDULUM'
Tis I,
your Reigning Queen of the Damned-Internet and 'MSS.
HORROR-DEN';2012, DITA DIRT NAP!
Hmmmm? DITA wonders if theirs, perhaps a 'Barbara Steele DVD Collection' yet??? She fascinates me to no end, and truthfully makes me feel a little bi, in a 'Katy Perry' kind-of-way! LOL Speaking
of 'bi', by-the-way, a wonderful & very colorful Original Theatrical Trailer of
tonight's Film, 'THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM', awaits
you, 'my little spider-bites', by Clicking below;

Very cool stuff, indeed! Derek, 'The Vamperic-Announcer' interrupts, 'Uh, does the 'tag-line', 'BETRAYAL CUTS BOTH WAYS', remind you of something, 'Mss. Long-Winded 2012'? DITA responds; Oh, quite right, 'BLADE-Jr.', the 'tag-line' for tonight's fright-flick, 'THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM'! VARIETY' Magazine said about this film; 'Blood, sweat and torture in a 16th-Century Spanish Castle!' Our film starts out on a dark and stormy night at a Castle by the ocean high on a hill. A man arrives by carriage and knocks on the Castle door and announces he is the brother of the recently deceased Barbara Steele character. The other women is Vincent's character's visiting sister from Spain. Too make a long story some-what shorter, here it is tide-up in a nice little package, with a 'guillotine-bow', hon; after some allegedly 'ghostly happenings', like a haunted-harpsichord, ghostly-whisperings, dis-embodied screams, and the dead girl's room looking like a tornado hit it, you know, a typical look for a creative type. HA-HA; 'B.J.' just said; 'I would know! Hmmm, how very droll, sweetie! Any-who, Mr. Price's character starts to slowly go insane, from all the shenanigans, ghostly or not, and follows his dead-wife's voice into a secret passage, described on the Director's Commentary by Mr. Corman, as a 'fruedian-vagina', DITA kids you not, and even makes a reference to a pillar next to Vincent in this scene as phallic!!! Well, I never! Uh, I mean, do tell. He gets covered in cobwebs as he dramatically makes his way back into the crypt that had been busted into earlier in this, fun fright-flick, to see if she had been buried alive, uh, don't ask. He then sees her coffin open, slowly to reveal her bloody hand, gripping onto to the lid to open it, this is a great effective scene and classic. He then runs scared, with 'dead-body-wife' in slow pursuit, right down into the 'pit', with yet unseen 'pendulum' and falls onto the floor with fright and finally goes insane. In comes the Dr. and he and the dead girl embrace. Embrace, huh? You see my little 'blood-bags', she and the deceiving Dr. have planned this all along to drive poor Vincent mad, uh, so they can be together, silly! Hmmmmmm, I've been sense-ing a theme in Miss Steele's movies, which is why later 'Price' some-what, over-dramatically calls her a 'HARLOT!!!' He now after all the 'trauma-drama' thinks he is his Torturous Father and that she is his mother and later thinks her brother is his adulterous Uncle, that cheated on him with his wife, after knocking the cheating Dr. to his death off the big-staircase, mind you, are you following this frightfully-fun soap opera, kids? Then Vincent's character still thinking he's his father, knocks out his wife's brother and ties him to the cool-ass guillotine/pendulum and starts that baby up! Love this scene!!! During this scene, there's of a obligatory struggle with cast members, um , I mean characters and then they end up locking the .................................and leaving behind.....................??? As you know by know, DITA mostly never likes to tell the whole story, so I'll just say that someone if they ever decided to make a Sequel, wouldn't make it to Part 2. What??? You know what to do, kids, just click on the DVD Icon next to Mizz DIRT NAP's Review and find out the ending on your very own classic Copy tonight! DITA enjoyed this film and it's cool cast & Director and Writer, Mr. Matheson & Mr. Poe and gives it 2 1/2 Skulls Out Of 3!!! A half a point was taken off, only because this is not my all time favorite Price/Corman pairing and because not enough Barbara for DITA's liking. Although definitely a 'worth-seeing' classic POE Film!!! This film has become one of the most popular POE/PRICE/CORMAN Films out of them all, by far! DITA also liked the way it looks on DVD, especially the color throughout the film that just pops when made digital. Watch for the beginning credits in 'sump-shoo-wus' running liquids color!!! Love it!!! * The only
'thing to look for on the list' that DITA forgot was the funny, but not meant to
be 'fake-corpse' in the wife's coffin, with big teeth, and wide open mouth! Last but
not least the 'Extra's' on the disc are as follows; Creature Feature © D. Dyszel 2012 Creature Feature is sponsored by Sounds Fabulous DJ Service and by Dick Dyszel's exciting new Las Vegas Style Stage Hypnosis Show |
