Original Japanese Name : 螢子, Hotaruko
English Name : Crimson Climax
Directed By: Katsuma Kanazawa
Studio : Green Bunny
No. eps : 3 ( Total runtime together = 90 Minutes )
Year of release : 2003
Genre : Erotica, Horror, Violence, Supernatural.

This week I decided I wanted to do a review of something extremely violent.. so I did a search online and found some recommendations for some of the weirdest and meanest animes out there. My favorite of which was the hentai " Crimson Climax". This 3 part series was released in 2003 and directed by Katsuma Kanazawa. It was also released by a popular hentai/erotica company named Green Bunny and based on a H Game ( Erotic game ) by Tiger Man.

The story follows a woman named Ryo, who returns to her mother's birth place in order to find some understanding as to why her mom became so eccentric and sexually bizarre. However when she visits the island she discovers a dark carnal cult who lure away young women for blood sacrifice. These women are seduced to their highest point of ecstasy and are then brutally slain to sacrifice their blood to a god known as " Master Mizuno".

The animation used is very modern and the female characters have been specifically made to look " Out of proportion" with huge eyes and other...huge assets. But despite this unrealistic approach the series wasn't that bad to watch with very vibrant colors, beautiful scenery and nice outlines. Due to the nature of this series I couldn't find an official trailer, However I did manage to uncover some clips. The following video doesn't have subtitles though.. but it is available with English dubs on DVD.

I personally rate this series quite high, with a 9 out of 10. I always enjoy a good and gritty dark horror more so than an action packed gun fight. However this series is a HENTAI so keep that in mind. For those who don't know what that means, it means it's erotica and contains very graphic sexual scenes. So it may not be to everyone's taste. ( and PLEASE don't let your kids watch it! )

Sadly this week I can't give you a preview of the books the series was based on, because unlike most anime series this one never was a book to begin with. So instead I will just leave you with some links so you can find the DVDs.

All DVDs come with the option of Japanese or English language.

Original Japanese Name: 強殖装甲ガイバー, Kyōshoku Sōkō Gaibā
English Name: Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor Or simply "Guyver"
Directed By: Katsuhiko Akiyama
Studio : OLM
No.Eps: 26
Year of release: 2005
Genre: Science Fiction, Action, Fantasy, Mystery

Keeping in theme with the Sci Fi anime I reviewed last week, this week I bring you a review of Guyver : The Bioboosted Armor or simply Guyver for short. This animated series is based on a very long running manga series called " Bio Booster Armor Guyver" and adapts chapters 1-59 of the books.

The story starts with a protoype Zoanoid who manages to escape from a company called the Chronos Corporation. With him he takes a bag containing three items called Guyver Units. Now the company need to find this runaway and gain these special items back. But unfortunately for them the prototype destroys itself and the Guyver pieces are now dispersed into the world. One of these pieces is then found by two high school students and merges with one of them turning him into a cyborg like creature called Guyver I. He is now the one in danger and must protect himself from this strange Chronos Corporation.

The animation they used for this series is so-so. Nothing really to make a song and dance about. Sadly I found this to go against the anime considering it also has a very standard plotline for the sci fi genre. The colors are a bit dull and the characters didn't seem that well drawn.. you can see for yourself here by watching the following trailer.

There has also been a live-action movie created of the same name and is loosely based around the original animated series and books. Also following on from that there was a second movie called " Guyver: Dark Hero" which was created in 1994. I have included a fanmade trailer for the second movie as one for the first couldn't be found.

I personally found this anime to be rather generic for my taste. I try to find things that are unique or have interesting character development. This one has neither. Just lots of action and various monsters and cyborgs and things like that. I would say.. maybe this is best suited to someone who just wants a quick movie with lots of action.

Now moving onto the books the series was originally based on. I found the manga to be a lot more interesting than the series. The books began back in 1985 way before the animated series and were written by Yoshiki Takaya. The series has accumulated 28 volumes so far and is still on-going. I must say that the artwork is MUCH better than the animation!

I give this series a pretty low 4 out of 10 this week. If I were you I would look into the books more than the anime OR the live action movies! BUT if you are taken by the fact it's full of cyborgs and explosions and gun fights you can find the DVD's below!
