Mortal Kombat
Publisher: Warner Brothers
ESRB rating: Mature
Availability: PS3, Xbox 360

"Reading Dante is unquestionably more cultured and intellectually edifying than playing Mortal Kombat...but these cultural and intellectual differences are not constitutional ones."
- Antonin Scalia,
Schwarzenegger v. Entertainment Merchants Association

It’s good to see that Mortal Kombat is finally going back to its roots with the latest installment of the series...Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat is a science-fantasy fighting championship; all of the games consist of a martial arts tournament in which eccentric characters battle each other to the death. Every fight famously ends with an opportunity for the winner to finish his (or her) opponent in some fantastically vicious way.

This Mortal Kombat is no doubt the best one yet. It combines all that was great about the uncountable Mortal Kombat predecessors with the graphics power of current generation game consoles. For example, virtually every character ever featured is available to fight with. Furthermore the fight mechanics have been revamped and are better than ever. This means the controls have enough complexity to satisfy hard core players while still being accessible to beginners.

Obviously, any game that allows you to finish off a defenseless opponent by ripping them in half and shaking out their internal organs is not suitable for children. It is not an understatement to call this the most gruesome Mortal Kombat ever.

The Good: Great fighting mechanics, deep story mode, nice graphics.

The Bad: The tournament format of the game makes it extremely repetitive.

The Fear Factor: The publisher actually advertises “the most realistic internal organs and blood effects”.

Overall Rating: 7 out of 10 gore splattered fight pits.

Dead Island
Publisher: Deep Silver
ESRB rating: Mature
Availability: PC, PS3, Xbox 360

Five years after its exciting announcement at E3 2006, Dead Island is finally here! The game takes place on the island paradise of Banoi where an infectious zombie outbreak is underway. The outbreak is bad news for the tourists on Banoi, but good news for gamers who get to explore the island in this first-person survival horror adventure.

Rather than being a linear game with a story that unfolds in a defined sequence of missions, Dead Island creates an open-world environment to explore and the story develops through interactions with the hapless survivors you encounter. The game play consists mainly of exploring the island and hacking away at enemies with improvised weapons, gradually completing quests that lead to the climax of the story.

Dead Island is a gift to fans of the zombie apocalypse. It is a large, detailed, interactive, zombie-ravaged world to explore while engaging in grisly blood-soaked combat with anything from a firearm to a broken boat oar. The game also features a great multiplayer mode. Dead Island’s main shortcomings are the underdeveloped characters, dialogue, and storyline. These shortcomings will probably not diminish zombie lovers’ enthusiasm for this action-packed gorefest.

The Good: Detailed environments, a lot of playable content, great multiplayer mode, not too difficult.

The Bad: Lackluster dialogue and voice acting, unoriginal gameplay and storyline.

The Fear Factor: The terror is intense at first but quickly wanes.

Overall Rating: 9 out of 10 flying dismembered zombie appendages.
