This
culty horror-rific Film also includes Actress's STELLA STEVENS ('THE NUTTY
PROFESSOR', 'POSEIDON ADVENTURE', etc.) (Another
DITA-Fave!) & MARY McDONOUGH (TV's; 'THE WALTONS',
etc.)! What a Cast & DITA hasn't even told you Storyline yet! Any-who, a Horror
Film perfect for viewing this 'MOTHER'S DAY'! As our Story starts out, the
Mother (Jeanne Bates) lives on her own in a House but decides to take on Boarder
either for extra money or companionship. Uh, that wuz her first mistake, hon!
Now her son is a Local News Reporter who she adores cuz he visits her often
witch u know all Mother's love! DITA forgot to mention that this strange, blind
new Boarder had recently killed or shall I say attacked and eaten a local
wood-be Bus Rider Lady before renting out a room with Dear old' MOM! Hmmmm?
Why u may ask??? Cuz he's really a Vampire-Ghoul Guy, silly! One night while
said 'favorite Son' is not visiting her, MOM accidentally knocks off
'Strange-guy's' glasses and........................all 'HELL' breaks loose!!! He
of course bites her after a quick transformation into 'Monster-teeth Ghoul Guy'
'BUTT' does not eat her. Cuz he's kind of soft on ole' MOM. She quickly develops
Super-strength and.............a craving for..................? Wait for it?
Wait for it...........'Homeless People!' You see now poor, sweet kind,
Turkey-basting, pie-making Mom now craves human-flesh too! First she goes
downtown w/'Strange-Guy', where they search for just the right homeless person
to take to dinner, fatten up, and walk down a dark alley and............attack
and feed on while on her knees all while wearing a nice Motherly Coat, scarf and
of course pearls! W-H-A-T? She can't look Motherly while ghouling-out???
Meanwhile, her favorite Son, followed her to the scene, after he had become
suspicious of Mom and her Creepy Boarder-Buddy, hanging out so late at
night............and Downtown even. He is of course shocked and mortified and
even loses his lunch in said dark Alley.
She seems pretty normal to this 'Ghoul-Gal'. Oh, right, she would seem tame in
the eyes of a fellow Ghoul. LOL Anyway, the Son later confronts her, she admits
it and they fight w/Strange-Guy and eventually kill him by fire. Hmmmmm?
Needless to say, her Reporter son increases his visits to Mom's House. What for,
u ask? To keep her from turning her neighbors & visitors into 'all-u-can-eat'
buffets, uh, D-U-H! Her son, by the way is married to his newly pregnant wife
played 'just-right' by Actress; MARY BETH MCDONOUGH
('The Walton's) who he is now super worried about cuz Ghoul's just love
tasty em-bree-o's, babe! Too make a long Story Shorter and to also not tell the
'WHOLE' story, here are my 'DITA's THINGS-2LOOK-4 LIST' as follows;
* All Scenes where both Ghouls transform into 'SCARY MONSTERS'!!! Kudos to the
Make Up Team on this film, especially the long, sharp pointy mega mouth full of
fangs! ( Cool!)
* All MOM's Killing Scenes which include; a Meter Man, almost a 'Girl Scout'
selling her infamous tasty cookies, a homeless man, a News Reporter Co-Worker of
her Sons, a Sexy big-chested Hooker, and sadly last but not least, one of her
own close family members (not her son), and an attempt on an 'in-laws' life.
Whew! For a 'Mom-Ghoul', that's some 'good-eatin'!!!
* Scene where MOM is locked up in her room with newly affixed Bars on the
windows, peering out at the male installer on a ladder and 'LICKING' her lips!
(Love it!)
* Scene with Girl-Scout, hmmmmm?
* Scene with MOM locked in her room howling demonically cuz she's hungry
for somethin' 'SKANKY' & big breasted & blonde!
* Scene with MOM being tied down to the bed by favorite Reporter son who just
lost his job cuz of the 'time spent being his Mother's keeper' and 'Food-Patrol
Warden'.
* Scene with the lovely & Sexy Actress; STELLA STEVENS playing a stacked,
spilling out of her braz-eer top Hooker w/Leopard-Print Hooker Coat in tow. All
her scenes are great and really are played to the hilt with sleazy perfection! (
Love her in almost anything w/Dean Martin, kids!!!)
* Scene where 'Hooter's-Gal' FINALLY goes upstairs to earn her pay with MOM!!!'
* End Scene with the Son, the Police Captain and pregnant Daughter-In-Law, etc.
Really 'Hot-Stuff' in this cool end-slight twist scene!!!

DITA loves this little culty movie that could! The only slight weak thing in it
is sometimes the pace witch could be a tad quicker. The Cast is great & eclectic
and the Storyline weird, fun and kooky in the Best way possible, except for some
of the afore mentioned pacing. DITA enjoyed watching this Mother's Day fright
flick w/heart, uh, a bloody ripped out heart strictly for snacking mind you, and
gives it a Score of 2 and 1/2 SKULLS Out Of Almost 3!! A half a point wuz taken
off for pacing only. 'Mamma-DIRT NAP' does however highly recommend this
hard-2-find Culty-Horror gem of a 'guilty-pleasure' witch u can own by Clicking
on the 'DVD-Icon' Next to Dear old Mother DITA's Review!!!

in 1943. Both these films have to do with
'haunted-house' themes and both happen to have beautiful full color Movie

Any-who, the Storyline in this Movie starts out with the Boys/'East Side Kids'
practicing their Singing, YES, I said singing! You see their one of their
friends from the Neighborhood is getting Married. Just who is he Marrying you
might ask? Only 'THE' AVA GARDNER HUH???
Yes, a young and
beautiful AVA GARDNER Plays their friends 'Bride-2-Be'. The scenes where Leo
presides over Choir Rehearsals are funny especially
when he has 2 of the boys go out to find more flowers. (DITA won't spoil it for
ya though. Ya gotta watch it!)
In
this 2nd Movie you're supposed to 'suspend-disbelief' and make believe the
'boys' have never met Lugosi's Character this time,
uh, in 'THIS' movie. Now their friend buys an old
house for he and his soon to be new Bride next to a 'suppoe-zed' Haunted House
w/strange goings'-ons . Hmmmmm? Just before the Wedding starts 2 things happen.
One is the one who would in later years be called
'Satch' has problems first wearing a Tuxedo borrowed
from a Funeral Home and then can't get the collar to fit, (DITA will just say
the 'Boys' help him out 'hood' style. LOL!) . The 2nd thing is that their
Groom-friend is hastily offered money for his recently purchased
'honeymoon-abode'. Hmmmmm?
Too make a long Story shorter, the 'BOYS' overhear after the Wedding at the 'Reception' that the Newlyweds aren't going to the new House cuz the Groom told her it wuzn't fixed up yet and were going to a hotel room instead. The 'Boys' being his friends decide to go and fix up the place and give it a good cleaning as well, just for the New 'Newlyweds'. They of course get the address confused w/the umm, haunted house next door and try to fix that gloomy place up instead! This is where they meet up with Lugosi again, playing a Bad-Guy this time around, possible Ghosts, and other things that Bump in the night, uh, like Nazi's and umm printing presses?????????????? HUH???
DITA doesn't want to tell all so I'll give u my; 'THINGS-2-LOOK-4-LIST' as
follows;
* Scene witch is DITA's Favorite where Lugosi's Character pretends to be a
picture in a frame until dusted and then sneezes a Dirty word!
(No foolin'!!! F.Y.I.-This part can be seen in
the Trailer, babe!)
* Scene w/Boys hearing disembodied voices talking back to them.
* Scene where Pictures keep changing; liking having coat on ........then having
coat off! (This Scares 2 of the Gang wit-less!)
* Scene where the Boys keep moving 'THINGS' from one house to another. ( Has to
do w/the plot, Hon.)
So are my 'Movie-Go-er's' hungry for all those delicious Tasty-Treats at our
'Grind-House' Snack Bar yet? DITA thinks u will be after seeing these quick

A-ny-w-a-y, the 'EXTRA'S' on this Disc were discussed last week
( just scroll down to see them again.) but of course the Other Feature is
included;

2012, my little 'Coffin-Creepers', as it is Public Domain!)
Here are my thoughts on these 2 Films; 'SPOOKS RUN WILD', DITA loved for reasons put down in last weeks Review and feels it stands the test of time. As for 'GHOST ON THE LOOSE'; DITA likes its Storyline. The 'EAST SIDE KIDS' do a fine job again w/comedy in this film. No complaints ever there. Here are some small Complaints on this Film even though overall DITA likes it.
First, not enough LUGOSI this time. Ghosts??? Not enough spooks or scares or DITA could say 'low- scare factor', good amount of comedy factor. Running time too short for Mizz DIRT NAP's taste. Seemed like maybe this time Production wuz rushed. Did they have a deadline? Did BELA have to be at work on another Film soon?? Somewhat confusing to this Ghoul-gal? I'm just sayin'. As DITA stated before, this is an enjoyable film, regardless of the rushed feel. But feel strongly about needing scenes with more LUGOSI and his wonderful mesmerizing screen presence!
Ava Gardner wuz great in her small role. DITA wonders if she wuz ever Interviewed or ever discussed working on this film? Hmmm? This film does have a fun feel to it but if u want more old-fashioned spook-factor in a haunted house w/more Bela and more high-jinks with switch/twist ending then go for 'Spooks Run Wild'. DITA Gives 'GHOSTS ON THE LOOSE' 2 SKULLS OUT Of 3 SKULLS! Points were deducted for lack of LUGOSI Screen-time and lack of more scares. Still worth a 'look-see!!' back to my 'Horror/Cult Drive-In' here in 'DITA's DEN' @ COUNT GORE's 'Weekly
Web Program, kids! I'm your Hostess w/the Mostest in
all the right rotted places, DITA DIRT NAP!
This week I'm extra excited as I over the next Couple of Weeks bring you a culty-cool retro 'Horror-Comedy 'Double Feature' perfect for the Drive-In from DITA-Fave 'MONOGRAM PICTURES' and Both Starring the Ultimate 'Horror-Icon'; BELA LUGOSI!
Tonight
DITA starts out with one of my Favorites Shown on
Television when I wuz just a little ghoul called; 'SPOOKS RUN WILD'! This low
budget delightful 'guilty-pleasure haunted house romp' has our Man BELA Meeting
the infamous 'Comedy-Team' from 'Monogram'; 'THE EAST SIDE KIDS', Headed by
Actor LEO GORCEY. Later they became known as the 'BOWERY BOYS'. The Other
Feature on this great 'Double Feature Disc; 'GHOSTS
ON THE LOOSE' witch will be Reviewed next week wuz Released w/BELA & The Boys
Teaming up Again in 1943. In fact the 2 Films were
Popular enough to 'DOUBLE-BILL' Together as seen in this Excellent Trailer by

See what I mean? Especially since 'Friday-The-13TH', just recently passed.
Any-who
the Film starts out w/the 'EAST SIDE BOYS' in trouble for doing something
'ram-bunk-shuss'! It is because of this they are sent off to a Camp for Boys.
On the way the Bus stops off to change a tire and the Boys wander into
the Town's Malt Shop to Flirt with the local waitress.
While there, they hear on the Radio that a Killer is on the Loose and headed
for the Town where the Camp is located. Hmmmm? Later that night at the
Boys Bunkhouse after 'lights-out'. Leo's character
decides to sneak out and back into town to have a date w/the pretty waitress.
Long story short, the other boys quickly follow, not
wanting to be left alone in case the 'Killer-on-the-loose' wanders into Camp.
They
quickly get lost and decide to take a short cut to hopefully get back into town
by detouring thru a Grave Yard. While there they are
shot at by the Groundskeeper. He wounds one of the boys and the grab him and
quickly escape
to a creepy hill top estate. Little do they know that earlier a Strange
Dr./Lugosi and 'little-person' Assistant; Luigi have just moved in that very
night............................with 2 Coffin-shaped boxes! Hmmm? They too were
seen in the Graveyard by the Caretaker, but when he
tried to shoot them, they mysteriously vanished, seemingly into thin air!
Right after the Dr. which the Towns people refer to as the 'Monster' and his Assistant arrive and move in the other character refer to as Dr.Von Grosch has the local Gas Station Owner help him w/lodgings and keeping his arrival undercover to help to get rid of the Killer??? Hmmmm? The boys go to the creepy haunted looking house to get help for their injured friend and that's where the good old fashioned fun starts. The boys tell the Strange Dr. (Played well by Lugosi!) the problem and how they need a Dr. for their friend. He tells them he knows Medicine and will help their friend. He does and then heavily suggests since he then gave their friend a sedative that knocks him out, that they all stay the night in the creepy , possibly haunted house. Everyone retires to their dark, dusty, spider-web filled creaky rooms, but of course don't stay for long. That my dears is when the hilarity, one-liners, cheap but effective on-set gags begin and the 'SPOOKS 'literally' RUN WILD'! DITA loves this kind of 'horror-comedy' of yester-year where the budget wuz low, the Talent great, and the 'butts' were in the seats!
This film made DITA smile at the 'EAST END KIDS' Comedy high-jinks and then marvel at LUGOSI's still shining 'Screen-presence' and last, treasure their 'on screen-pairing for 'MONOGRAM', not once but twice, witch you will see next week. 'SPOOKS RUN WILD' started with the filming title of; 'GHOSTS IN THE NIGHT', but wuz changed when it wuz released just days before Halloween in 1941. This my fiends, is definitely a hot-buttered popcorn w/spider-sprinkles kind of a Flick best watched curled up close together in the front seat of your convertible, top down, stars in the sky over the Drive-In and Speaker Volume turned up high.
Oh, and
don't forget to give your Date, a nice, big, fat, long, juicy, mouth watering,
uh........HOT DOG, Silly! Geesh, what did u think 'Mamma-DIRT NAP' wuz gonna
suggest? Get your mind outta the gutter. Wait, are those my panties? Umm,
anyway, our Concession stand has those Hot-Dogs waiting on the grill for u now

Bet your
hungry now babe! But wait theirs a few details 'LADY-DIRT NAP' left out of the
Story. There's also a nurse who wants help the boys
and goes to check on them......uh, 'ALONE' and on foot, huh! The big, dumb men
around her before wouldn't bother to help her so she went it alone. MEN, can't
live with em', Can't live with out em'! 'B.J.' says;
What Dear? DITA Responds; Nuthin' honey.
Any-who, the afore mentioned Dr. Von Grosch sees her hitchhiking and tells her
friends are in trouble at the creepy Mansion and speeds off to take her there.
When they arrive she finds out..................that...................she finds
out that they, uh,.....................................???
As you know DITA never likes to tell the whole Story, uh, usually so I will now

* Cheezy Skeleton in dungeon/basement area found hanging around by the boys.
(Love it!)
* Haunted Suits of Armor?
* Scene with Tall Skull/Ghoul w/cape that scares Lugosi's character and then
knocks him out with flying skull to the noggin'. ( Funny scene reveal.)
* Scenes w/Boys chasing their friend who they now think is a Zombie roaming the
cavern/basement.
* Scene w/the boys disappearing into dark box one at a time.
* Kind-of chase scenes w/Lugosi & Boys.
There are more fun/scare scenes but DITA doesn't want to reveal them all. I do
not want to reveal what happens at the end but I will say the Police do arrive
and some people have a Dinner together. A 'Turn-Around' technique is involved.
DITA highly suggests this throw-back 'Horror-Comedy' entitled;'
SPOOKS RUN WILD' and loved the look of it on this DVD. There is also a
fully remastered DVD by itself from 'Reel Enterprises' on Amazon but it said
their were only 3 left. This quality of transfer is suitable for any Collection
though. Here now are the 'EXTRA'S' Included on this 'Double Feature' Disc as
follows;

DITA wishes there were Films made like this again, but probably not possible in
this day & age, simply cuz we don't live in those
simpler times when those films were made. The good thing is that we have them
preserved on film and especially DVD forever simply to remind us ghouls of how
it use to be! DITA still thinks there's nothin' like a good old fashioned
haunted-house horror-comedy flick at the 'Drive-In' to
make you feel all 'icky' inside, in the best way possible!!!
