Hey you spy guys & chicks! I'm back from my secret mission for the CIA, where I seduced the young (over 18) wives of Osama Bin Ladin and then put LSD in the drinking water of an evil foreign country! I still don't know what that was about but hey, I did it for the USA!

Anyway, welcome back to the dining room! Tonight, we will have some fine steak and Vodka Martini, shaken not stirred!! Hang on to your Aston Martin, and get ready for a wild ride as I give you a look at real life secret agent, E. Howard Hunt!! Yes, this the man who was involved in the Watergate break-in! Before any of you get uppity, please note that both parties spy on each other all the time! Nixon was the only one to get caught!

So what does Hunt have to do with stuff that fans of Creature Feature like!? Well, I'm getting to that!! Let's take a look at Hunt's impressive resume: secret agent for the CIA, convicted Watergate conspirator, forger of cable grams, second story man and... author of private eyes, spies, and horror novels!! Oh, he also knows who killed JFK!! But more on that later!!

Hunt used his CIA code name David St. John to write novels (fiction) while he was in the CIA and after he left! He was a better writer than you might think! After Watergate, Fawcett books reveled his duel identity as David St. John and reissued some of his books! So far, I have read four of his spy & horror novels and I plan to track down more in the future!

So, lets take a look at his work, I'll start with the book that has been re-released by Hard Case Crime books, “HOUSE DICK” (1961) is about a hotel detective in a Washington DC hotel ( NOT Watergate!) who finds a dead body in one of the rooms! It's a strange tale of murder, burglary and blackmail!! The story takes so many turns, you don't know who to trust! It's a great hardboiled story plus if you ever lived in Washington DC, you will know some of the places, he's writing about, and even get a good idea about how DC looked in 1961!!

Next up is “One of Our Agents is Missing” (1967) a cool spy novel featuring Hunt's continuing character, CIA agent, Peter Ward! That's right, Hunt had his own spy series, and why the hell not? In the groovy 1960s there was ( in books) James Bond, Matt Helm, Nick Carter, Tiger Mann, Sam Durell, ect, so why not a spy character created by a real spy? (Bond was the same way but British) . You can never have too many spies!! However, Hunt found a way to keep Peter Ward fresh into the 1970s (more on that later). In “One of Our Agents Is Missing” one thing leads to another, as Peter goes to Japan to find an agent who disappeared while deep undercover and he has to find out if the agent is a traitor, victim or wife cheater!! Peter winds up meeting with an old KGB agent who wants to defect because he thinks he will be killed because he knows too much! So he offers the CIA a device that can intersect and decode messages from the USSR!! Meanwhile, the damn Chi-Coms are causing student unrest in Japan for their own nefarious purposes!! Hunt also throws in some killer geishas, hot sex with Japanese chicks and some S&M for good measure!! An important note, in this novel, Hunt introduces readers to the word “cutout” a CIA cutout is someone who is on the payroll but not an official agent! CIA agents cost a lot to train and are not expendable but cutouts are like the guys in Star Trek who wear red shirts!! Peter Ward is asked if he would like a cutout to help him!! An interesting side note: Lee Harvey Osward was a CIA cutout! He was on the payroll and to this day, his income tax records are STILL classified!!! Anyway, “One of Our Agents is Missing” is full of violence, blood, sex, nasty villains and spy gadgets! In other words, a great read!!
 

Next up is “Diabolus” (1972) By the cover and the plot description, you would not know that not only is this a horror tale BUT a SPY novel with the guy I just told you about, CIA agent, Peter Ward!! Peter, is vacationing in a island that is still under French control and his young housekeeper is murdered by an evil voodoo cult!! He informs the police, then the chief who is so scared of the Voodoo cult that he escorts Peter Ward out of the island! Peter vows to return but first, he takes a trip to France to stop an evil plot ( master minded by the Chi-Coms!) of Satanic political blackmail! Yes, you read that right! It seems that the new Prime Minster's wife has been duped into believing that she is a reincarnated witch ( drugs & hypnoses!) so she has joined a Satanic cult where pictures have been taken of an orgy that she took part in!! She had a mask on but a birthmark exposes her true identity!! Peter gets knocked out by a strong hallucinogenic & wakes up three days later in an asylum, but he's such a bad ass that he kills three men and busts out! He then pulls a “Mission Impossible” stunt to fool the blackmailers so they think that real demons & the Devil himself show up at the mother of all black masses!! An actress is disguised as the prime minster's wife to discredit the black mailers because the real wife was with her husband with the U.S. Secretary of state! The blackmailers flee to the island where Peter goes for the final bloody showdown that ties it all together to where it started!! Well!! This book was even better than one of “One of Our Agents is Missing”. Secret Agents! Sexy Chicks! Exotic Islands! Unspeakable horrors! Satanic Blackmail!! Another great read!!

Next up is “The Coven” in this story the witchcraft & black magic are real!! Unfortunately, not a Peter Ward story but a corporate lawyer named Jonathan Gault discovers that a beautiful songstress has been murdered and that it involves Black Magic vs White Magic and a senator with presidential ambitions!! Again, Hunt really knows how to write a page turner!! The story takes place in Georgetown in Washington D.C. If you lived there during the 1970s, you would feel like you were back in time!

He wrote some more thrillers but I have not tracked them down yet, but I will!! You can find these great books (used) by clicking on the Count's Amazon link!! As I said before, Hunt was a real life CIA agent and he knew who killed JFK!! No, I'm not crazy, on his death bed, E. Howard Hunt had his son taped his confession that he was in charge of logistics for the Assassination of JFK!! You may ask why would anyone agree to that!? Was not Hunt a good guy ? Sure, but lets say you're a CIA agent and they tell you what you're GOING to do! That's right, they just told you the plot! If you say no, then they have to kill you!! Of course, it's not as bad as being a cutout! Lee Harvey Oswald was a cutout so he was expendable! For those of you who are STILL delusional and believe that Oswald acted alone, please note these facts: the Warren Commission did NOT see the famous film that has now been aired many times! The presidential limo was destroyed by LBJ after only one month after the murder!! Why!? The brother of the mayor of Dallas was a general who called JFK a traitor for not going all the way in the “Bay of Pigs” invasion!! The famous film was not shown until the 1970s and then congress was mad because they had NEVER seen the film!! LBJ hated JFK! The House Select Committee on Assassinations (1978-1979) said in it's final report that President John F. Kennedy was very likely assassinated as a result of a conspiracy, this committee had access to more evidence than the Warren Commission!! Hunt's son recorded his deathbed confession where he states that the JFK assassination was code named “the Big Event” and he names the conspirators as: David Phillips, Cord Meyer, Frank Sturgis, Dave Morals, William Harvey, Lucien Sarti ( French gunman who worked for the Mafia! Damn French!) AND Lyndon B. Johnson! There is no question that LBJ hated JFK and that Johnson had ties to some of Dallas' crime bosses!! JFK hated him right back and was going to dump him when he ran for re-election!! To cover the details would take a whole book and this is Creature Feature and there are no vampires or voodoo in the rest of this story! But truth is stranger than fiction! So now I lock my doors, load my .357 Magnum and pour myself another Martini and wait for them to come!

As Nixon said about Hunt... “This fellow Hunt, he knows too damn much!” And now so do YOU!
